Winter Homeschool Activities

Winter is a wonderful season, in my opinion. Maybe it’s the fact that the weather is cozy and wonderful. Maybe it’s because I don’t sweat in these months. Or maybe its because things seem at a pause and stand still. But in all honesty, it’s because I truly do like winter and fall. These seasons seem to bring reflection on all that the Lord has done and will do with each passing season. A sweet gentle reminder to slow down.

In our homeschooling this past week we learned more of winter animals, their hibernation, and even some wonderful facts! I came across this wonderful print out that paired well with our wintry hibernation books as we learned more of their anatomy!

We played with play dough creating dens to show how the animals are put away for winter. We began to ask questions and learn as to why some hibernate and why some don’t.

The girls even watched a few short videos on each animal they learned about bringing more facts.

Winter can be fun. And so can education.

This week we will learn about birds and how they are taken care of during the winter, how they keep warm, their anatomy, and more! I even came up with a fun project for them to do, going on a walk and having a scavenger hunt finding “wintry” things if they can. We also will collect pine cones we find on the floor to make handmade bird feeders placing them along the fences and trees for the birds this winter.

As much as I wanted to teach them all the things, I heard the Lord say slow and rest. To rest in this wintry season and to slowly have them learn of wintry things. There is something beautiful he wants to teach us, but if we feel rushed and just do it going on to the next lesson, how then can it be soaked into us? It can’t. It’s like reading the Bible. We can’t just read and put it away. We must soak on what we read, meditate on it, understand what we just read. Otherwise we just read without it planting deep in the soil of our hearts.

Same with our homeschool right now. This is how he wants it to be and so shall it be. Slow, steady and resting. Learning of what He wants us to learn and know along with understanding more of who He is.

For homeschooling in winter, you can do all sorts of things.

  1. Read the Bible together and recite the Word. Have them draw out what they read as it can help them remember and also have a love and art for the Word of God.
  2. Learn to bake a new recipe together
  3. Read winter stories and winter weather
  4. Have each child learn of animals and then have them do their research writing facts of what they’d like to share with you and their siblings.
  5. Go on a winter hike or walk. Talk about nature and how each season serves a purpose in our lives and in natures lives.
  6. Make decorations for the home, homemade.
  7. Make homemade bird feeders with pine cones

These are just some of the things we are doing this wintry season while embracing and enjoying the season of homeschooling in winter.
